No. 170. (R).
28th September, 1931.
Minister for Foreign Affairs asked to see me this
afternoon about murder of Japanese at Kowloom. His
Excellency said he was most grateful to British authorities
at Hongkong for precautions taken to protect Japanese there but was bound to ask me, none the less, to represent to Governor the danger to Japanese at Kowloon. He had been besieged with applications from anxious relatives and was also anxious about safety of Japanese reported to have assembled in some large building on a
hill.
I assured Minister for Foreign Affairs that Hongkong authorities must be doing all that was possible. I had this moming telegraphed to the Governor for information on account of rumours prevalent in the town. I would inform His Excellency of this interview.
Minister for Foreign Affairs thanked me and asked me to keep him informed of any news I might receive. Addressed to Foreign Office, repeated to Peking and Hongkong.
